In our previous article, we introduced 5 easy self-service methods to help you recover your NVR password. However, these options only work if you’ve set them up in advance.
So, what if you haven’t done that?
Don’t worry — in this guide, we’ll show you an official recovery method using an XML file, supported by both older and newer models. Let’s walk through it step by step.
Preparations
1. Connect your NVR, router, and computer as shown in the diagram below.
2. Make sure all devices are powered on and connected to the same local network.
3. Download the SADP Tool from Hikvision’s official website and run it on your computer.
How to Reset Your NVR Password – Step by Step
Step 1: Export the XML File via SADP Tool
1. Click "Refresh" to scan for available devices.
2. Select your NVR from the list.
3. Click "Forgot Password" in the lower-right corner.
4. When prompted, click "Export device feature code file" to generate the XML file.
5. Save the file to your desktop or another easy-to-access location.
Tip:
Make sure the file you export ends in .xml. It contains encrypted device info and is required to generate your password reset key.
Step 2:Send the XML File for Password Recovery
1. Email the exported .xml file to your support contact.
2. If your device is from us, please send it to support@hitosino.com, along with the following information:
- Device model
- Platform (e.g. Amazon, eBay)
- Order number
- A brief note requesting password reset assistance
3. Wait for the support team to reply with a key file (usually within 24 hours).
Tip: If you don't receive a response within 24 hours, please check your spam folder or follow up with our team.
Step 3: Input the Key or Import the Encrypted File to Reset Your Password
Depending on your device and the file you receive from support, follow the appropriate method below:
a) If You Received a Key
1. Open the SADP Tool again.
2. Click "Forgot Password" for the same device.
3. Select Input Key.
4. Enter the verification code provided by the support team.
5. Set and confirm your new password.
6."Tick 'Reset Network Cameras' Passwords' to reset camera passwords along with the NVR."
7. Click Confirm to complete the reset.
b) If You Received an Encrypted File
1. Open the SADP Tool again.
2. Click "Forgot Password" for the same device.
3. Select Import File.
4. Click the file icon, and choose the encrypted .xml file.
5. Set and confirm your new password.
6. Tick “Reset Network Cameras’ Passwords” to reset camera passwords along with the NVR.
7. Click Confirm to complete the reset.
Note: It’s highly recommended to tick “Reset Network Cameras’ Passwords” to avoid camera connection issues — especially if you’ve also forgotten the camera passwords.
Common Issues & Tips to Avoid Reset Failure
1. Use the same computer and network
Make sure the computer you use to export the file is the same one you use to import the key. Both your computer and NVR must stay connected to the same local network.
2. Do not reboot the device or re-export the QR code/XML file
After exporting the password recovery file, do not reboot the NVR, and do not re-export the file before you receive and import the key.
Any such action will invalidate the previously generated key or code.
3. Do not change the system time or IP address
Avoid changing the NVR’s time, IP address, or other network settings after exporting the file. These changes can cause the key file to become invalid.
4. Check your password format
Your new password must meet complexity rules: usually at least 8 characters, including both letters and numbers. Some models may require a mix of uppercase, lowercase, and symbols.
5. Use the file within 24 hours
Key files or codes are usually only valid for 24 hours. If expired, repeat Step 1 to generate a new XML file or device feature code.
6. Firewall and antivirus issues
If SADP cannot detect your NVR, temporarily disable your computer’s firewall or antivirus and try again.
How to Avoid Losing Access to Your Device in the Future
1. Bind an email address or phone number
This allows you to reset the password via verification if supported by your device.
2. Export and securely store the GUID file
The GUID file is essential for password recovery. Save it to a USB drive or cloud storage with a clear file name.
3. Set a password hint
A simple reminder can help you recall your password without needing a reset.
4. Set up security questions and answers
If supported, these add an extra layer of security and can be used for identity verification during recovery.
5. Link your device to a Hik-Connect account
Devices bound to Hik-Connect can support remote management and, in some cases, cloud-based password recovery.
6. Record your password and store it safely
Use a password manager or write it down and keep it in a secure location.
7. Periodically check password strength and validity
Avoid weak or common passwords (e.g. "123456") to ensure long-term security.
Conclusion
That’s it — your NVR password should now be fully reset, and your device ready to use again.
