The enclosed housing is one of the main reasons for using a dome camera in accessible locations.
For example, the Hikvision DS-2CD2143G2-I(S) has an IK10 impact-resistance rating and IP67 weather protection. The DS-2CD2786G2-IZS also offers IK10 protection with a motorized varifocal lens.
Not every Hikvision dome has the same impact rating. The DS-2CD1147G2-L(UF), for example, is rated IK08.
For locations where cameras are within reach, the IK rating provides a clearer measure of impact resistance than the dome shape alone.
Dome cameras with transparent covers need proper installation and occasional cleaning.
Dust, fingerprints and scratches on the cover can scatter infrared light back toward the lens. This can create a foggy or washed-out nighttime image.
Hikvision recommends keeping the cover clean and ensuring that the foam ring around the lens sits firmly against the inside of the dome. Nearby reflective surfaces can also cause IR glare.
